In addition to everything Cleveland has to offer, Northeast Ohio provides easy access to a number of popular destinations that are perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway. With just a short drive, fellows can visit Cedar Point in Sandusky, widely regarded as one of the best roller coaster parks in the world, or enjoy the Lake Erie islands such as Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay. Fellows can also spend time at Blossom Music Center, a popular outdoor concert venue and summer destination boasting some of the biggest acts in music during the summer season, or visit Geneva-on-the-Lake, a classic lakeside town known for its relaxed atmosphere, local wineries, and seasonal recreation. Together with the Lake Erie shoreline, nearby ski areas, and charming small towns throughout the region, these attractions give fellows plenty of opportunities to relax, recharge, and enjoy all that Northeast Ohio has to offer during their fellowship year.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the region’s true highlights, with an internationally recognized collection and free general admission, all located in the heart of University Circle. Nearby, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History has long been a favorite destination for both adults and children, with engaging exhibits that explore science, wildlife, and the natural world. University Circle also includes several other notable institutions, including the Cleveland Botanical Garden and the Western Reserve Historical Society, which is home to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum and showcases the region’s transportation and industrial history.

At the center of this cultural landscape is Severance Music Center, home of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra and one of the premier concert venues in the country. The city is also home to Playhouse Square, one of the largest performing arts districts in the United States, where audiences can enjoy Broadway productions, concerts, comedy, and a wide range of live performances. Cleveland and Northeast Ohio offer an outstanding outdoor lifestyle that often surprises those who are new to the region. Just minutes from downtown, The Cuyahoga Valley National Park provides a remarkable natural escape with miles of scenic hiking and biking trails, wooded valleys, waterfalls, and access to the historic Towpath Trail along the Cuyahoga River. There are only THREE United States National Parks in the Great Lakes region, and we are fortunate to have one in our backyards! The Cleveland Metroparks, known locally as the “Emerald Necklace,” surround the city with an expansive network of reservations featuring trails, golf courses, riverfront scenery, and easy access to nature in nearly every direction. Whether exploring the Rocky River Reservation, running along shaded paths after work, or spending a weekend on the trails, our fellows have exceptional opportunities to stay active year-round.
